This is definitely in the realm of eye-candy, and has no functional value whatsoever, but I just discovered Tab Effect – it makes changing tabs in Firefox a whole lot more fun For those of you familiar with Compiz, it’s got that kind of feel to it. For those who haven’t, check out this short video.

Theme installation broken temporarily

It seems I did more than just break download counts – theme installation was completely fubared Our apologies – we’ve now fixed the problem (thanks to Giorgio Maone and Wladimir Palant.)

Also in the latest update, Morgamic fixed a bug which caused your add-on to be updated (as in, jump to the top of the recently updated list and RSS feed) when you changed some of the metadata associated with it (eg. add-on description.) Add-ons are now only “updated” when a new version is uploaded. (While it could be argued that an extension is actually being updated when the developer adjusts the metadata, we believe that uploading a new version of an add-on is what users actually expect when viewing add-ons that are recently updated.)

The Remora meeting yesterday was a long one, but productive IMO. We thrashed out a lot of scheduling and target milestone stuff… and although we’ve missed our current ship date twice already, this time I’m remotely confident that we can make it, as long as we don’t change our requirements again… heh.

Sunbird -> iPod

Wanted: Functionality to export my calendar from Sunbird to my iPod whenever I plug it in. MozPod is well on the way to getting it done, but it’d be even cooler if it came inbuilt into Sunbird… maybe. I don’t know if Windows has any standards for detecting when things get plugged in and what sort of hardware/software is on the end of that USB cable, because you don’t want to go adding custom support for every device under the sun.. and how do you tell it to save the file in /Calendars/ hmm, I’m not the expert here.

And speaking of experts.. it looks like the calendar folks already have the ideas rolling.

Firefox 2 RC1

I updated to RC1 today and as predicted it didn’t solve the crash-at-startup problems I was having. Finally decided it was time for a new profile so I migrated the files over and installed my add-ons again. Now everything seems to be hunky-dory. I’d like to have the time to go through my old profile and see what exactly the problem was, but I just don’t have the dedication. It’s full of junk from all the add-ons I install because of all my work for AMO (my prefs.js was over 350KB.)

So now I’ve got everything set up and back to normal – it rocks! And if I go to Help -> About Mozilla Firefox -> Credits, my name is in there! Apparently Shaver got all the folks working on Remora in there… I think we should now refer to him as “the string puller.”

My favourite new features in Fx 2 would have to be session restore and inline spell checking – Firefox crashing and losing all my tabs (which kind of work like a to-do list) was one of the biggest pains in the ass, and my spelling isn’t great (although it’s not bad either) so these make a big difference to me. I’m not so enthusiastic about microsummaries, and while the visual refresh is cool, it’s not uber fantastic. I don’t use search plugins (I use quicksearch bookmarks to save UI space) but I do appreciate all the other thousands of bugs that have been fixed for the release.

I can’t wait for Fx 3 too – Fx2 was branched off the same branch as 1.5 was on (1.8) so there have been things fixed on the trunk from over a year ago that will not be in Fx2, but that’s development for you
